PERU: Walking the Saltankay Route to Machu Picchu, Day 3

Today was another acclimating, goofing around day.  Bob and Glenda had come in the afternoon before so we all went to the Inca Museum.  Very interesting, and had enough English subtitles to make it worthwhile for us non-Spanish speakers/readers.

We could see rock walls in many places in town - evidence that Cusco is really a city built by the Incas - until the Spanish "conquered" them in the early 1500's.
The photo above is of Koricancha (many different spellings appear to exist).  You can see Incan stonework, without mortar) at the bottom - the gray color.  The church is built on top of the Incan stonework foundation.  During an earthquake, the church crumbled and the foundation remains intact.

This photo is a closeup of a stone wall built by the Incas.  The stones are so carefully constructed that you can't slide a filet knife between them.    We learned early, that much of the fascination of Inca history is that much of it is simply unknown.  How did they carve and fit the stones?  No-one knows.  But it's pretty incredible.  I can't do that with wood and power tools.
